Women's Health Q&A

What is women’s health?

Women’s health is focused on the specific health care needs of women. With women’s health, Beverly addresses your sexual, reproductive, and general health.

Women’s health can involve the diagnosis and treatment of many conditions, such as infections, sexually transmitted diseases, and even certain forms of cancer.

At Agape Family Healthcare, women’s health might include menopause treatments, Pap smears, STD testing, pelvic exams and checkups, and contraception for women who wish to prevent pregnancy.

What does a women’s health exam include?

A women’s health exam is sometimes called a well-woman exam. This exam is an integral part of your overall health care. During the exam, Beverly performs several assessments.

Physical exam

During the physical exam, Beverly checks your general appearance, your lungs, heart, and vitals. During this part of your exam, Beverly takes time to determine the status of your overall health. This is also a great opportunity for you to mention any concerns or changes you have regarding your health.

Pelvic exam

With a pelvic exam, Beverly examines the health of your cervix, vagina, vulva, uterus, and ovaries. You might also have an STD (sexually transmitted disease) test during your pelvic exam. This part of your women’s health exam allows Beverly to detect any concerns or issues with your reproductive or sexual health.

Pap smear

A Pap smear is routinely performed during your pelvic exam. Pap smears are an effective testing method to check for signs of cervical cancer.

Breast exam

During your breast exam, Beverly carefully feels for abnormalities and lumps in your breast and under your arms. Breast exams can be used to detect breast cancer and other conditions.

Women’s health exams are recommended annually, but you might need care at other times during the year, for example, if you have a UTI or a yeast infection.

What are some of the most common conditions that affect women?

Some of the health issues and conditions that only affect women include menopause symptoms and conditions of the female organs, such as cervical cancer, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and fibroids.

Many conditions affect men and women in different ways. For instance, certain sexually transmitted diseases are often more serious in women than in men. Some conditions are more prevalent in women, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and osteoarthritis — a condition marked by weakening bones.

Other conditions that commonly affect women include irregular, heavy, or painful menstruation, endometriosis, and vaginal infections.
